Reflections from a “Retirement” Do

Last night, I had what was officially called a “retirement” do — though I must confess, retirement still feels like a distant concept!

It was a truly special evening, filled with laughter, memories, and the faces of so many brilliant former trainees. Many of them are now senior consultants, specialists in their fields, and looking far more distinguished than when we first met in scrubs all those years ago.

It was both humbling and heartening to see how far they’ve come. Training the next generation of surgeons was one of the greatest privileges of my medical career — and seeing them now, confident and accomplished, is more rewarding than words can express.

As for me? Well, despite the retirement label, life is as full and fast-paced as ever. Representing Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket in Parliament is an honour that keeps me busy, inspired, and on my toes.

But nights like these are a chance to pause, reconnect, and remember how every chapter of our lives shapes the next.

To all those who joined me — thank you. Your presence meant a great deal.
