Statement on the Findings of the Parliamentary Commissioner on Standards

The Parliamentary Watchdog on Standards recently carried out two related investigations into the conduct of Dr Peter Prinsley MP for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket.

The first investigation concluded that Dr Peter Prinsley MP inadvertently breached Rule 6 of the Code of Conduct for Members by not declaring a visit to Israel between 25-29 May 2025 donated by the Labour Friends of Israel at the start of the Home Affairs Select Committee meeting of 1 December 2025. Dr Peter Prinsley MP has apologised for the inadvertent error and has corrected the record. No further action is required.

The second investigation was prompted when the East Anglia Daily Times incorrectly reported in a lengthy article that the Parliamentary Watchdog on Standards was investigating Dr Peter Prinsley MP in relation to “land and property”. This was not the case. When asked about this claim during a live BBC interview, Dr Peter Prinsley MP denied that this was the reason for the investigation. He now recognises that he should have declined to comment while the investigation was ongoing. Accordingly, he has apologised to the Parliamentary Watchdog on Standards.

The East Anglia Daily Times subsequently printed an apology and correction which made it clear that at no time had Dr Peter Prinsley MP been under investigation in relation to “land and property”. The BBC also reported that the investigation did not "relate to property matters, as reported elsewhere".
