My Statement on Jackdaw and Rosebank

I support the Government’s announcement on the Jackdaw gas field, but I do not support the Rosebank oil development.

In reaching these decisions, I have considered three important priorities: protecting our energy supplies, tackling climate change and keeping energy affordable.

Jackdaw could provide over 6% of the UK's gas production at its peak, enough to heat 1.4 million homes. Producing gas closer to home strengthens our energy security and can create fewer emissions than importing gas from overseas, which requires additional processing and transportation. Gas also plays an important role in providing electricity when wind and solar power are unavailable.

Jackdaw will not directly reduce household energy bills, as gas prices are set internationally. However, it is estimated to generate £2.9 billion in tax revenues over the next decade, while supporting skilled jobs. These revenues can help fund investment in cleaner, renewable energy as we work towards our commitment to net zero by 2050.

I do not support Rosebank because the case for further oil drilling is very different. Much of the oil produced would be exported, doing little to improve our energy security or lower bills. I am also concerned about the environmental impact of expanding oil production and the message this sends about Britain's commitment to tackling climate change. We must balance our immediate energy needs with our responsibility to future generations.
